(no subject) @ 05:05 pm

Sorry everyone...unexpected family business came up and had to be MIA a little. I finished my heart quilt for my friend with cancer. It turned out pretty good. I gave it before I could take pic. :-) Now I am making her daughters one. They are 8, 11, and 13 and when they saw mom's they wanted one too to use while she was getting treatments .... how could I say no. :-) So, that's all for now. Spring break is next week and I am looking forward to that. I plan on working on Dad's quilt and the march and april birthday blocks quilts. :-) LATER

2008 Projects @ 03:12 pm

Jackson Quillow - I took it to his party before I could take a pic....AHHHHH.

Ashlynn "Fast" Jungle quilt and pillow for nap time. Something she can get dirty. :-) Each piece on the pillow is a seperate piece of fabric. That took a while. :-)
Name of Quilt - "IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE"

Ashlynn Valentine's Day present - I made the blocks bigger than usual (18" square) and right now the blanket is 3' by 4 1/2'. The finished quilt will fit her toddler bed.
(I got the idea from a post that someone left for me...thanks.)

Mom Watching TV Lap Quilt - Mom requested I throw together something really fast for her to use while watching TV. dad, bros, sis-in-Laws, niece, and nephew have taken over all her others that I have made. So...here you go mom. It is pieced, sandwiched, pinned, and ready to quilt.

Name of Quilt - Mother's Love
Myself - This log cabin was actually the first quilt that I ever pieced a very long time ago.  I have finally decieded to quilt it on my retreat in 2 weeks. I have had it sitting there forever and everything seemed to jump in line in front of it. But, now the time has come. :-) I also showed a picture of the fabric that I am going to use for the label. I made the quilt after the school that I currently work at. Our colors are red and black and our mascot is the bulldogs. Opelika is the school name. I really love my first quilt. :-)

Dad's Quilt @ 12:58 pm

Ok, so I know this is a HUGE undertaking, but I think it will be well worth it. This will be my "work in progress" post to keep myself on track where I am at and where I am heading. If you know my dad...MOM....do NOT let him know this is coming. :-) I really want this to be a surprise. OK...10 months and counting...here we go.

Rough idea of where I am heading...

**Just noticed that I left out the S in SMSGT. oops....better not do that on the quilt. ** :-)

Front of Quilt - I would like his name, rank patches, and some pictures of his enlistment and retirement. I will have to search the albums for those. I am not looking forward to that. I also have an idea about a border on the front. On the uniform they have these bars that they wear above or below their name tags. (I don't know what they are called.) I want to get a pic of his retirement shadow box (has a copy of all of his bars) and quilt each of the bars and connect them into a border. Does that make any sense?

Oh yeah.....I want as much of this quilted as possible. I got some suggestions from friends (thanks guys), but it looks like I may have to get out the good old paper and pencil and put my math skills to the test to make the logo as large as I would like to make it for the quilt.

I found some letter patterns to do his name at the top and U.S. AIR FORCE at the bottom with. I will figure out the sizes of those and then determine the size for everything else from that. Just found out that my pattern for letters is going to make me 4" letter. hmmm....let me go calculate.
They all look pretty easy too!!!

Back of Quilt - American Flag ( I want the flag to be as realistic as possible.) If anyone knows of any great flag patterns (exact replica of the flag), please let me know. The strips will be easy, and I can create a paper piece pattern for the stars, but if I can find a pattern already made and buy it, that would save me a lot of time. (Why reinvent the wheel....right?) :-)

YEA!!!! I found the perfect star pattern....check it out.

Oh yeah...I will be quilting the front of the quilt. The quilting wont show much on the back and the front will have a lot of empty space, so I think it will look kinda neat to have the front quilted over the flag. :-)

This made me cry... @ 02:14 pm

It makes me really mad when my students groan at saying the Pledge of Allegiance or when people don't feel that soliders deserve our thanks. Some people just don't realize the cost of freedom.

IT IS THE SOLDIER by Charles M. Province

IT IS THE SOLDIER, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
IT IS THE SOLDIER, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
IT IS THE SOLDIER, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us freedom to demonstrate.
IT IS THE SOLDIER, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
IT IS THE SOLDIER who salutes the flag,
Who serves under the flag and
Whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight: nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety: is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions and blood of better men than himself."

- John Stuart Mill
